Brewing news USA: Spoetzl Brewery enjoyed frothy sales in 2005

Spoetzl Brewery, brewer of award-winning Shiner Beers based in Texas, has recently announced it has enjoyed notable sales growth in 2005, San Antonio Business Journals communicated on January 23.

Overall sales of Shiner products grew nearly 10 percent in 2005. Spoetzl Brewery officials say this was a tall order as beer continues to struggle to generate any positive growth in the face of ever-increasing pressure from wine and spirits.

Sales of Shiner Hefeweizen grew 34 percent and seasonal brews Shiner Dunkelweizen and Shiner Kolsch together are up 30 percent.

Shiner Blonde added to Shiner's momentum with five percent growth, while the brewer's flagship Shiner Bock, Texas' top selling specialty beer and fourth best-selling specialty beer nationally, grew sizably at eight percent.

All of this combined to help Shiner beers surpass 4 million total cases in annual sales for the first time ever, with over 1 million cases sold outside Texas. Shiner products are now available in 35 states.

"It is gratifying to have the opportunity to share our beers with more and more beer drinkers all over the country, while still doing things the same way we have for over 96 years," says Shamus Hanlon, Shiner's brand group director of marketing.

The Spoetzl Brewery bills itself as the oldest independent brewery in Texas. “As the oldest independent brewery in Texas, the Spoetzl Brewery has been brewing up Shiner beer since 1909. Tours are available in which patrons can sample a variety of our brews: Bock, Blonde, Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen, Kölsch, or the brand new, Shiner Light. The Brewery is also open to the public for free tours. Click here to take a virtual tour of our Brewery.”
